Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River. The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house. Boaters are able to dock at either the fixed dock when booking with shore power, or the floating docks if power is not needed. The marina offers 30amp and 50amp shore power.

Note that the marina has both fixed and floating docks on site, however the floating docks do not offer shore power. The dock hands were excellent. Got tied up quickly and efficiently in the current. The onsite restaurant was very good. Live music was enjoyable without being too loud.

After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal. Good dinner at the restaurant.

Use our search bar to find nearby marinas or private listings. Marina Staff are great but tug and barge traffic very challenging. A little crazy on a holiday but the staff is great and works hard. We will definitely add Schaefer's to our 'must return' list. A few weeks later, with fall weather tightening its chilly grip, the inside portion of Schaefer’s felt much calmer. When Wetterau and his staff weren’t running ragged, they were able to author some terrific homespun flavors.
Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats. Great experience on the C and D canal. Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May.
A band was playing, dinner was being served along the docks, and after a quick shower on board, dinner on the dock was fantastic! The band continued after we went back on board, and it added to our cocktails on the flybridge. Schaffer's is a desirable destination, not just a great marina and restaurant. Beautiful view of a competitor across the Canal, too.

Empty drinks piled up on the edge of the table, and the vibrantly colored sky had turned black. The band had been replaced by an iPod. It was one of the last perfect evenings of the summer, and the disappearing sun shot the sky full of hazy orange and cool pink swatches high above the C&D Canal. A three-piece calypso band plinked away at steel drums and clacked on claves.
In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant. Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend. A little noisier than most places due to the bridge traffic and the restaurant but not bad. Good and pleasant dock help (Olivia). A 2-3 knot current with an easy approach.
We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you. I had a cold beer and thought of the sounds as a funky reggae beat. Great location midpoint on the C&D canal.
The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained. The current can be strong going into the fuel dock, so make sure when docking you approach against the current and have staff help grab your lines.

Without the crush of summertime revelers, Schaefer’s kitchen proved it could transform ingredients into creative dishes that transcended the fish-house norm. Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic. Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise. Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide.
At $29, the house-special steamer pot shouldn’t be highlighted by corn on the cob. It was the sort of night made for kicking back at the beautifully restored Schaefer’s Canal House. Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. The marina staff were excellent in all phases, approach and tie up was easy, and everyone respected the no wake zone so there was minimal rocking.
The boat traffic both large and small, rocked us all night long.There is no bath house, so that is certainly a “con”. The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements. Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.
Much like its neighbors at the cross-canal Chesapeake Inn, Schaefer’s is bound to spend summer nights as central HQ for much docking, drinking and dancing. Just a few weeks into its revival, Schaefer’s Canal House—a Chesapeake City classic—was slammed. The overhaul nearly doubled the restaurant’s capacity to almost 300 seats. This is a great place to stay. Tom, Steve, Olivia and staff were great- friendly and professional and the restaurant is also great, it’s on the bike path and water taxi is available to cross over to town. Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night.
